The Scelta Story
The Scelta story is the story of a true Venlo mushroom family. The father of Jan Klerken, CEO and owner of Scelta Mushrooms was truly the founding father of what exists today. In 1963 he set up Champex, a mushroom-growing business. Five years later, Champex also started canning mushrooms. At the age of 16, Jan took his first steps in the world of business when he started work for his father’s company.
When Champex was sold in the late seventies, Jan headed to France and Spain in his lorry to buy mushrooms and to process them in the Netherlands. He sold this company in 1988, remaining involved as managing director for a further five years. In 1993, Jan decided to set up the company Scelta Mushrooms. Scelta innovated and expanded. Partly as a result, the company moved a number of times. Today, Scelta is one of the biggest players in the global mushroom world.
Mushrooms form part of our DNA, because Jan inherited a love for them from his parents. The Klerken family has been active in the mushroom industry for 50 years, of which Jan, as the second generation, for 40 years now.
Scelta Mushrooms has been around since 1993, and has steadily evolved since the early days, with an ever-growing business and assortment of products.
Jan is not the last in the line – he and his wife, Marita, passed ‘the mushroom trait’ onto their children, Jan jr. and Jules, also proud to be part of the family business. Since its foundation in 1993, Scelta Mushroom has grown to a group of no less than 9 companies.
Scelta is Italian for ‘choice’
Jan invented the name Scelta Mushrooms in a bed of the Golden Tulip hotel in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands, during one of his business trips in 1993. Scelta is Italian for “choice”. With it Jan made it clear that he planned to change track. His foray into the production of mushrooms was, to put it mildly, not to his liking, so he chose the combination of innovations and trading. A conscious choice: Scelta Mushrooms.
The Scelta Institute
Home of winnovations
Jan even went a step further: he built a palace for the mushroom: The Scelta Institute. All his explored paths merged together here at this location.
In 2002, Jan first turned his thoughts to finding new premises for his company. He had a dream. He envisaged a beautiful building, with attractive office space, its own R&D centre and a kitchen with in-house chefs to test new recipes. A building that would be a meeting place for people who want to work together and dare to share ideas. A building that inspires people, binds them and invites them. Located where it all began, at the Champex site in Venlo.
Six years later, in 2008, Jan’s dream had become a reality and The Scelta Institute, designed by Belgian architect Fred Hias, opened its doors. It is the head office of Scelta Mushrooms and the base for Scelta’s sales, marketing and innovation, complete with office space, meeting rooms, a state-of-the-art kitchen, a restaurant, bar and wine cellar, a presentation area and a small demonstration mushroom cellar.
More than an Institute
The Scelta Institute is the epicentre where new products are constantly created based on market and customer input; it is the space to co-create with customers on the future of mushrooms. This building is host to corporate events, and the happy faces of customers, suppliers and Scelta staff. It is more than an institute – it is a home to everyone in the world of innovation and food. And mushrooms, of course.
The Scelta Kitchen

Because it has so much to offer, we like to share the building with others. Especially for companies that are active in the food industry and want to focus on research and product development. Furthermore, the Scelta Institute is used as a venue for seminars, presentations, tastings, courses, networking events, theme-based evenings, etc. It is the perfect place to meet, create, have fun and be inspired. 2018 sees the 25th anniversary of Scelta Mushrooms. 25 years of ambition, innovation and forward thinking. 25 years in which we have diversified into a variety of mushroom product categories – frozen, preserved, flavourings and dried. Plus expanded into vegetable appetizers and health ingredients.
Boundless thinking has turned a local family business into a leading global distributor. It led us, in 2002, to pivot from canned and bottled mass production to frozen, and to focus on what we call ‘winnovation’ – winning innovation – and growing traditionally niche products into widely loved ones. And it led us to open three new factories in 2017, one in 2018. Yet we remain a family firm. Proudly so.
